REMInder INSTRUCTIONS
REMInder is designed to help you remember things.
You give REMInder messages and the date for each that you want to
BEGIN to be reminded. This information is stored to disk. When
you run REMInder, it checks to see if any dates are today or
older (the program does a search for CURRENT dates), and if so,
it shows the related message(s). You can also search for certain
TEXT, by any DATE, or to show ALL. The messages and dates can be
edited. Reminders that must repeat monthly or annually are
therefore easily managed. The INSERT key on your keyboard
toggles between INSERT and TYPEOVER mode. The HOME, END, and
arrow keys move the cursor.
REMInder requires that your computer knows the correct date.
Some computers have clocks inside that always know the date.
Other computers need to be given the correct date through use of
the DOS DATE command. The REMInder main menu screen displays
the date known to the program.
The REMInder program system includes two files, REMI_COL.EXE and
REMI_MON.EXE, for color (COL) and monochrome (MON) monitors. For
ease of use, rename the one you prefer to REMI.EXE. For example,
if you choose to use the color program, you would give the
following DOS command:
ren remi_col.exe remi.exe
Now you just have to type remi to run the program! The first
thing the program does is search for 'current' dates, i.e. dates
matching 'today' or older. If it finds any, it displays their
reminders. Whenever reminders are being displayed (VIEWed), you
can CHANGE (edit) or DELETE them, or go to the main menu. The
program may not find any current reminders and take you directly
to the main menu screen which will state 'no matches found'.
From the main menu, you can:
1) select a SEARCH criterion by:
TEXT string
CURRENT date
any DATE
ALL reminders
2) VIEW the selected reminders
3) enter a NEW reminder
4) save and exit
REMInder always shows you a menu or gives you specific
instructions. You activate menu choices by pressing the
indicated letter.
Dates are entered using one of two methods. You may enter a
month / day / year in the familiar XX/XX/XX format where each
parameter is given as a one or two digit number. For example,
July 1, 1992 is 7/1/92. Or, if your computer knows the correct
date, you can use the t commands. Enter a t for today's
date, t+# to enter a date # days ahead, or t-# to enter a date #
days back. For example, t+7 enters the date for a week in the
future. T-30 enters a date for 30 days in the past. T+366 and
T-366 are the maximum ranges.
New users will need to create some reminders to see how REMInder
works. Select N to create a new reminder. The program prompts
you for the date to start showing you the reminder. Enter a date
in the XX/XX/XX format or use a t command as described above.
Next enter the reminder message. You may find it useful to
include key words or dates in the message text to act as search
parameters. Entering a new reminder clears any previous search
strategy.
EXERCISE FOR NEW USERS:
Enter some new reminders. Then select S for SEARCH on the
main menu. Use two different search methods to find the same
reminder message. Now find two different reminder messages using
the same text string. Now make that message appear one month (or
one year) later by selecting C Change and D Date to edit
the date.
A complete REMInder system includes the following files:
REMI_COL.EXE - the color version of REMI
REMI_MON.EXE - the monochrome version of REMI
(one of the preceeding may be renamed REMI.EXE)
REMIREAD.DOC - this file
REMIREAD.REG - a text file explaining how and why to register
REMIREAD.EXE - enter remiread to display the remiread files
also
REMI.DTA - the saved reminders on disk
REMIREG.DTA - the file given to registered users
Be sure to include the first five files when making a copy of
REMInder to distribute. Do not copy REMI.DTA because it contains
YOUR reminders. Do not copy REMIREG.DTA because that could
spread your name on unregistered copies of REMInder.
If REMInder does not find the REMI.DTA file, then the main menu
screen indicates that no data file was found. This should be the
case for new users. Use the DOS delete command to remove an
unwanted data (reminder) file.
